How to calculate the area of a square or rectangular room?

For a simple square or rectangular room, you calculate its area by multiplying the length of the room by its width.

e.g. a simple rectangular room:

6m x 5m = 30m².

When you have got your measurements, add 10% to your total to allow for wastage.

How to calculate the area of an irregular shaped room?

For an L-shaped or an irregular room, draw a rough sketch of the layout. Split the drawing into squares and rectangles so that they can be easily measured.

For each square or rectangle in your sketch, you calculate its area by multiplying the length of the square/rectangle by its width. Always record the measurements as you go along.

Add up all the areas of the squares/rectangles to find the total area.

e.g. an l-shaped room:

1.5m x 4m = 6m².

1.5m x 2m = 3m².

6m² + 3m² = 9m².

When you have got your measurements, add 10% to your total to allow for wastage.
